MG3 new car review

New cars which cost under £10,000 tend to be tiny city-car models with modest performance and limited cabin capacity, but there our MG3 new car review reveals this model to be a notable exception.

The MG3 is a true contender. It’s not a city car but a roomy hatchback with nippy performance and a decent amount standard equipment, yet astonishing costing just £8,399.

Smartly and sportily styled, and with many affordable personalisation options, the MG3 brings some real character to an often quite dull sector.

Entry level models come with six airbags, stability control and emergency brake assist, hill-hold control, two Isofix child seat mounting points, tyre pressure-monitoring system, electric front and rear windows, radio/CD player and a USB socket.

The mid-spec 3Form trim adds air-con, a DAB radio/CD, Bluetooth, a smartphone dock, remote central locking and a leather steering wheel with audio controls, and my test model 3Form Sport version (still sub-£10k at £9,899) adds 16in alloys and a bodykit, stop-start fuel-saver system and daytime running lights.

Power from all versions comes from a 1.5 litre 106 hp petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Many class rivals will take 12 seconds or more to reach 60 mph, the MG3 takes just 10.4 seconds. Top speed is 108 mph and the fuel figure is 51.5 mpg combined.

The sector is crowded with rivals such as Nissan Qashqai, Renault Kadjar, Suzuki Vitara and Dacia Duster so newcomers to have to stand out to get any attention, and the MG GS does just that.

It has more road presence than many rivals thanks to potent front-end styling, a big eye-catching MG badge, roof rails and side-guards, and is very competitively priced, starting from £14,995.

MG is a traditional and fondly-regarded car brand which these days is Chinese-owned and is really developing fast in the UK, with soaring sales certain to be further boosted by this new SUV model.

There is only one engine option available at present, a 1.5 litre petrol unit offering 164 hp. It is good for a 0-60 mph time of 9.6 seconds, and a top speed of 118 mph. The fuel economy figure is 46.3 mpg combined, a decent figure for a sporty petrol engine. Continue reading
